85-year-old Pelosi retires after decades of service in American politics
Nancy Pelosi, a Democratic politician from California and the first woman to serve as Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, announced that she will not run in the next congressional election in January 2027, thus ending her several-decade-long political career.
85-year-old Pelosi first became a representative for San Francisco in 1987 and quickly rose through the ranks in the Democratic Party.
She served as Speaker of the House from 2007 to 2011 and again from 2019 to 2023, playing a significant role in advancing or blocking the policies of several U.S. presidents.
During her career, Pelosi was instrumental in passing major initiatives like the Obama healthcare law, infrastructure packages, and climate change measures during Biden’s term. She was also a vocal critic of Donald Trump, with many still recalling her controversial act of tearing up a copy of Trump’s State of the Union address.
