Gazprom demands compensation from Poland

Russian energy giant Gazprom has filed a lawsuit against Polish companies in the Saint Petersburg court seeking over $900 million in financial compensation.

According to Reuters on March 7th, the reason for the compensation request was not disclosed, but Gazprom claims to have lost income or suffered from the other party’s failure to fulfill previous payment commitments with multiple energy companies from Central European countries.

Two years ago, Russia had asked Poland to pay the fuel transportation costs from the Yamal gas pipeline in Russian rubles, and after Warsaw’s refusal, Moscow cut off gas supplies.

Poland, which is allied with the United States and Ukraine and a member of NATO, announced the termination of the gas transit contract that was supposed to continue until 2045 due to its refusal to meet Russia’s demands.
