Israeli airstrike on Beirut, the capital of Lebanon

The Israeli army announced that it targeted the central command headquarters of a Lebanese militia group in southern Beirut

The explosions in Beirut occurred just minutes after the end of Benjamin Netanyahu’s speech, the Israeli Prime Minister, at the United Nations General Assembly in New York. The Israeli Prime Minister had previously rejected a 21-day ceasefire proposal between Israel and the Lebanese militia, put forward by the United States and some of its allies.

Published images from the site of the explosions in southern Beirut show thick smoke rising into the air. Eyewitnesses reported that the intensity of the explosions on Friday evening caused buildings in the city to shake.
