The Netanyahu government’s bill received initial approval from the Knesset
On Monday, the Israeli parliament, despite widespread protests and opposition, finally voted in favor of advancing the overhaul of the country’s judicial system, which is supported by Benjamin Netanyahu’s hardline government.
While tens of thousands of Israelis gathered in the streets near the Knesset, loudly voicing their protests, the parliament members gave initial approval to the bill. Benjamin Netanyahu immediately reacted to this preliminary vote on his Twitter account, writing, ‘A great night, a great day.’
From the beginning, it seemed that Netanyahu, with 64 seats out of the total 120 seats in the Knesset, could secure parliamentary support to advance this plan. After an eight-hour session among the representatives, the controversial right-wing cabinet’s bill to reduce the powers of the judiciary was ultimately approved in its first stage with 63 votes in favor and 47 against.
