A woman was chosen as the CEO of the European Investment Bank
European Union finance ministers announced on Friday that they have selected Nadia Calviño, the Spanish Minister of Economy, as the new CEO of the European Investment Bank (EIB), a financial institution that has gained strategic importance in Europe following the outbreak of the war in Ukraine.
This 55-year-old Spanish economist is fluent in English, French, and German.
She will be the first woman to take on the executive responsibilities of the European Investment Bank.
Calviño, who is considered the number two in Spain’s left-wing government, will replace the German Werner Hoyer.
Her competitors were former finance and economy ministers from Denmark, Italy, and Poland, as well as a Swedish deputy from the European Central Bank.
