ABC Report on Efforts to Activate Direct Satellite Internet in Iran

ABC’s report on efforts to activate direct satellite internet in Iran

On Monday, ABC News reported that a group of Iranian activists in the field of open access to information are in talks with the U.S. government to activate direct mobile phone communication services via satellite over Iran.

According to this report, the activation of the technology known as DirecttoCell allows users to receive the internet directly on their mobile phones without passing through any local infrastructure or domestic telecommunications networks. In this method, the internet connection is established via satellite to mobile phones.

The ABC report adds that with the activation of this technology, the ability of the government to identify, track, and control users inside Iran will be significantly reduced, a factor that could enhance citizens’ access to free internet during widespread internet shutdowns or restrictions.
