Ahmad Khatami’s Insult in Tehran’s Friday Prayer: An Unveiled Woman is Sick
Ahmad Khatami, the temporary Friday Prayer leader of Tehran, in a speech today on July 21, made offensive remarks from the podium of this ceremony, stating that a woman who goes out unveiled is sick. She should not be slapped but rather treated with kindness.
Mr. Khatami, who is known for expressing harsh and provocative opinions about youth and women, said in today’s Friday prayer sermon regarding dealing with women who defy mandatory hijab: ‘The interactions should be humane and kind. These are the daughters of this nation; they have not come from abroad. The forbidding of evil should be in accordance with the Quran.’
In his speech, Mr. Khatami, while denying the impact of the Islamic Republic’s actions on citizens’ views of religion and faith, said: ‘By attributing hijab to clerics, they deceive the unveiled ones, whereas a hundred years ago, religious authorities spoke about hijab when it was not political.’
