Aliabadi’s Complaint About the Airplane Graveyard at Mehrabad

Abbas Aliabadi, the Minister of Industry, Mine, and Trade, asked knowledge-based companies to assist this ministry in solving the problem of grounded airplane graveyards at Tehran’s Mehrabad Airport. According to Aliabadi, these airplanes either have technical issues, lack engines, or cannot have their parts imported due to sanctions.

However, he did not mention how these companies are supposed to solve this problem given Iran’s economic situation and the sanctions.

In recent years, there has been a significant increase in aviation accidents in Iran, both for passenger and military planes. Many experts attribute these incidents to the aging aviation industry and the inability to modernize the air transport fleet.

Due to sanctions that have been ongoing for the past four decades, Iran cannot purchase passenger airplanes and their equipment from international markets, and the country’s aviation fleet is severely worn out.
