Amir-Abdollahian in a phone conversation with Muttaqi: Securing Hirmand’s water rights is our serious demand.
Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, the Foreign Minister of Iran, has told Amir Khan Muttaqi, the Foreign Minister of the Taliban government, that his country is demanding the release of water and securing the water rights of the Hirmand River from Afghanistan.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry has announced in a series of tweets about the phone conversation between the two sides, stating that Mr. Amir-Abdollahian told Mr. Muttaqi that the release of water by Afghanistan and securing Iran’s water rights is a serious demand of the Islamic Republic of Iran and that this matter affects bilateral relations.
The ministry added that the Foreign Minister of the Islamic Republic, referring to the numerous problems that the lack of securing Iran’s water rights and the resulting drought has imposed on the people of Sistan and Baluchestan, expressed hope that the Afghan side will make the necessary efforts to release the water from this dam and deliver water to Sistan.
Mr. Amir-Abdollahian also pointed to instances of tension and conflict between Iranian border forces and the Taliban, describing it as a negative factor in the relations between the two countries, and stated that commitment to the security of the shared border is our red line.
