Amnesty International: The Iran-US Agreement Should Not Lead to Impunity
Amnesty International announced that the agreement between Iran and the US to end recent conflicts should not be limited to merely halting military operations and must be accompanied by guarantees of human rights, justice, and accountability.
Agnès Callamard, Secretary-General of Amnesty International, reacting to the signing of this agreement, said that the war, which she claims started with illegal attacks by the US and Israel in violation of the UN Charter and continued with illegal actions by the Iranian side, has resulted in months of suffering and serious violations of international humanitarian law.
She emphasized that this agreement brings fragile peace to millions in the region but warned that any agreement solely limited to ending conflicts and not addressing human rights and accountability could become a cover for continued impunity, occupation, and repression.
Amnesty International also expressed concern over ongoing tensions in Lebanon, stating that Israeli forces remain in southern Lebanon and conflicts continue. The organization called for the safe return of refugees and an investigation into possible violations of international law in Lebanon from 2023.
In another part of this statement, the human rights situation in Iran was highlighted. Amnesty International stated that stopping military attacks does not mean an end to threats against civilians and pointed to issues such as arbitrary detentions, enforced disappearances, torture, and unfair trials.
According to the organization, since the start of the conflicts, at least 44 people have been executed and over 6,000 have been detained.
Amnesty International concluded by calling for independent investigations into all potential violations of international law and holding the perpetrators accountable throughout the region.
