Amnesty International Report: Iraqi Kurdistan Officials Fail to Address Women's Complaints

Amnesty International report: Kurdish authorities in Iraq are neglecting women’s complaints

Amnesty International states in a report that women and girls in Iraqi Kurdistan who are victims of domestic violence face horrific obstacles when they file complaints and seek government support.

The human rights organization says that perpetrators of murder, sexual assault, and battery against women in the autonomous region of Kurdistan in northern Iraq are often not prosecuted, and the judicial system functions in a way that gives offenders a sense of immunity.

The Amnesty International report indicates that similar signs are observed in other parts of Iraq as well.

In the first four months of this year, out of 14,000 complaints registered regarding domestic violence across Iraq, only about one hundred convictions have been issued.
