Amnesty International Statement: Shameful Celebration of the Anniversary of the Founding of the Islamic Republic Amidst Decades of Mass Killings
On Monday, February 6, Amnesty International released a statement declaring that the refusal of Islamic Republic officials, particularly former government diplomats, to acknowledge the 1988 massacre has led to the continuation of a cycle of international crimes and cover-ups intended to eliminate any political dissent.
In its statement, the organization highlighted the role of former Islamic Republic diplomats in covering up the 1988 massacre and protested against the dissemination of false information and opposition to international investigations in the face of numerous credible evidence regarding the execution of thousands of political prisoners in the summer of 1988.
The statement, titled Shameful Celebrations of the Anniversary of the Founding of the Islamic Republic Amidst Decades of Mass Killings and Cover-ups, mentions that more than forty years later, current officials of the Islamic Republic of Iran continue to use similar strategies to conceal international crimes and other serious human rights violations while undermining international responses, as they employ their forces to suppress ongoing nationwide protests.
