Amnesty International Urges Iran to Disclose Belgian Aid Worker’s Location and Release Him

Amnesty International calls on Iran to disclose the location of the detained Belgian aid worker and release him

The human rights organization Amnesty International reported that the authorities of the Islamic Republic have subjected the Belgian aid worker Olivier Vandecasteele to enforced disappearance, torture, and other ill-treatment.

The report adds that Vandecasteele is being held in solitary confinement in a windowless underground cell and is deprived of adequate healthcare and fresh air.

This Belgian aid worker has been sentenced by the Revolutionary Court to 40 years in prison and 74 lashes.

Amnesty International adds that there are signs that the Iranian authorities have taken this Belgian citizen hostage with the aim of pressuring the Belgian authorities to exchange him for an imprisoned security official of the Islamic Republic in Belgium.
