Amnesty International’s concern over the fate of Jamshid Sharmahd
The human rights organization Amnesty International has expressed concern in a statement about the risk of execution for the 68-year-old Iranian dissident Jamshid Sharmahd.
Mr. Sharmahd’s trial in Branch 15 of the Revolutionary Court in Tehran concluded on January 10th, accused among other things of ‘spreading corruption on earth’.
On February 21st, the Revolutionary Court announced that he had been sentenced to death. In response, Germany called for the revocation of this sentence.
Mr. Sharmahd’s family has rejected these charges, emphasizing that he was only the spokesperson for Tondar and that his activities had no connection to attacks inside Iran.
Jamshid Sharmahd, the leader of the Tondar group, was abducted by Iranian government agents in Dubai during a trip to the United Arab Emirates in the summer of 2020 and transferred to Iran.
Amnesty International describes Mr. Sharmahd’s trial process as sham and highly unfair.
According to the organization, the Iranian government is suspected of wanting to use this Iranian-German citizen for a prisoner exchange.
