Amnesty International’s letter: End the war on women to impose compulsory hijab
Amnesty International’s letter: End the war on women to impose compulsory hijab. In a letter addressed to Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei, the head of the judiciary of the Islamic Republic, which was published as an urgent action, Amnesty International listed numerous brutal suppressions against women and girls, calling it the Iranian authorities’ war on women to impose mandatory dress codes.
The statement, released on Tuesday, May 7th (18th of Ordibehesht), refers to the launch of the ‘Noor Plan’ and the deployment of security patrols in public places in Iranian cities to force women to comply with compulsory hijab.
Amnesty International states that the government’s repressive actions have intensified in public spaces since last month, using any means, including beatings, sexual violence, electric shocks, arbitrary arrests and detentions, and various forms of harassment to trample on women’s right to choose their attire.
As of Saturday, April 14th, the authorities of the Islamic Republic have resumed their harsh crackdown on citizens over compulsory hijab, naming this program the ‘Noor Plan’.
