Amnesty International warns the global community not to be deceived by the disbandment of the morality police.
Amnesty International states that the Attorney General of the Islamic Republic has deliberately made contradictory statements regarding the shutdown of the morality police.
Mohammad Jafar Montazeri, the Attorney General of the Islamic Republic, said on Sunday, December 3, that the morality police is not related to the judiciary and was disbanded from the same place it was established, although the judiciary continues its oversight on societal behavior.
Heba Morayef, the head of Amnesty International’s Middle East and North Africa division, warned on Tuesday, referring to these statements and their contradictions, that the international community should not be misled by these words regarding the ongoing violence against Iranian women and girls embedded in mandatory hijab laws.
Morayef further described Montazeri’s statements as deliberately vague, noting that they do not reference the legal and policy foundations that perpetuate mandatory hijab against women and girls.
