Annalena Baerbock’s Warning Against Normalizing Relations with the Assad Regime

Annalena Baerbock, the German Foreign Minister, warned on Monday, May 16, against the unconditional normalization of relations with Bashar al-Assad’s regime. She emphasized that Assad should not be rewarded for human rights violations.

The German Foreign Minister described the political process to resolve the conflict in Syria as unattainable and added that for over 10 years, there has been nothing but bloodshed and human suffering in Syria, which is reported with difficulty.

Baerbock’s remarks came after her meeting with Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud, her Saudi counterpart. The Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that the two officials discussed regional and international issues. These talks were held in the city of Jeddah in western Saudi Arabia.

Baerbock is scheduled to meet with Ahmed bin Mubarak, the Yemeni Foreign Minister, in Jeddah on Tuesday. The German Foreign Ministry had previously stated that Baerbock would visit Qatar after her trip to Saudi Arabia.
