Antonio Guterres, the UN Secretary-General, said the Middle East is on the brink of a crisis.
Antonio Guterres, the UN Secretary-General, painted a grim picture of the Middle East on Thursday, warning that escalating tensions over the war in Gaza and Iran’s attack on Israel could turn into a full-scale regional conflict.
Guterres, speaking at a UN Security Council meeting attended by several foreign ministers, including those from Jordan and Iran, said the Middle East is on the brink of a crisis. In recent days, we have witnessed a dangerous escalation of tensions both in rhetoric and action.
He emphasized that a miscalculation, a miscommunication, or a mistake could lead to an unimaginable event and a devastating conflict, urging all parties to exercise maximum restraint.
Mr. Guterres condemned both the attack on the Iranian consulate and the massive firing of drones and missiles at Israel, stating that the drone attack was a serious escalation of tensions. He said it is time to end this bloody cycle of retribution. It’s time for it to stop.
