Araghchi: The U.S. economic expulsion operation is an assault on the sovereignty of independent countries.
Seyed Abbas Araghchi, the Foreign Minister, in a letter to the UN Secretary-General, the President of the Security Council, and UN members, called for the condemnation of the U.S. economic expulsion operation against Iran and the immediate cessation of Washington’s threats and economic actions.
Araghchi wrote that the aim of this operation is to end legal economic relations with Iran by threatening countries, companies, and foreign entities with secondary sanctions and exclusion from the American financial system.
He emphasized that this policy effectively means forcing independent governments to change their legal trade relations and extending U.S. laws and policies across the global economy, considering it contrary to the principle of sovereign equality of states and the right of countries to independently determine their economic and foreign policies.
The Foreign Minister also claimed that this operation deliberately targets civilians indiscriminately and, by limiting access to food, medicine, medical equipment, energy, and other essential needs, will have direct humanitarian consequences.
Araghchi called on the Security Council and UN members to condemn the U.S.’s unilateral coercive measures and secondary sanctions and to urge Washington to immediately stop threats and actions designed to force third countries to change their legal economic relations.
He also asked Antonio Guterres to assess and report on the humanitarian and human rights consequences of these actions on the Iranian people and announced that Tehran reserves the right to pursue legal action to compensate for the damages caused by these actions.
