Armed attack on a Sufi lodge in Saqqez

Iranian news agencies report that three people were killed in an armed attack on a Sufi lodge in Saqqez.

It is reported that Sheikh Azad Shahabi, along with two of his followers, were killed in the attack on a Sufi lodge in the Tepe Malan neighborhood of Saqqez.

According to the IRIB news agency, Sheikh Azad was first injured and had been transferred to Shafa Hospital in Saqqez.

Colonel Seyed Ali Safari, the police commander of Saqqez, told Tasnim that on Wednesday night, an individual entered a location in the city of Saqqez with a weapon and started shooting, which resulted in the death of two identified individuals and the third identified as Sheikh Azad.

Mr. Safari did not provide any explanation about the attacker’s possible motive but stated that the police have obtained good leads in this regard, which will be announced soon.

An Instagram page associated with the Qadiriyya order stated that the funeral of the victims of Wednesday night’s attack will be held at the Aichi Cemetery in Saqqez.

The Qadiriyya order is a mystical Sunni branch, and its followers consider themselves disciples of Abdul Qadir Gilani.
