Arrival of Pakistan’s Army Chief in Tehran
Iranian state media have confirmed the arrival of Field Marshal Asim Munir, Pakistan’s army chief, in Tehran by releasing a video. This visit is aimed at pursuing negotiations between Iran and the United States.
According to a report from IRIB, this senior military official arrived in Tehran on Wednesday, April 14, leading a political-security delegation, and is tasked with conveying a message from the United States and planning for the second round of talks.
An Iranian senior official also told Reuters that this visit is aimed at reducing tensions between Iran and the United States, and Mohsin Naqvi, Pakistan’s Interior Minister, is also part of this delegation.
According to informed Pakistani sources cited by IRIB, there is a possibility that the second round of negotiations will be hosted in Islamabad in the coming days.
These developments are part of Pakistan’s ongoing diplomatic efforts to mediate between Tehran and Washington. The first round of these talks was held on Saturday in Islamabad but concluded after about 21 hours of discussion without reaching an agreement.
However, J.D. Vance, the Vice President of the United States, mentioned significant progress in these negotiations and indicated the possibility of continuing the talks.
A few hours before the release of this video, Ismail Baghaei, the spokesperson for Iran’s Foreign Ministry, had also mentioned the potential presence of a Pakistani delegation in Tehran.
The visit of Pakistan’s army chief occurs while the United States, on the orders of Donald Trump, has initiated a naval blockade of Iran starting Monday.
