Assembly of Experts member suggests using harsher punishment than ‘moharebeh’ for protesters
On Tuesday, December 27, Ebrahim Raisi described the nationwide protests as a ‘party war’ during a ceremony in Tehran and threatened that there would be no mercy for the opponents.
At the same time, a member of the Assembly of Experts from Khuzestan also urged judges to use the charge of ‘baghy’ instead of ‘moharebeh’ for detained protesters.
According to Fars News Agency, Mohsen Heidari stated that ‘baghy’ refers to those who rise against the Islamic system, and the punishment for ‘baghy’ is much harsher than for ‘moharebeh’, as ‘moharebeh’ only involves intimidating people and does not concern the Islamic system.
The Hrana News Agency recently reported on the identification of 58 citizens sentenced to death or at risk of receiving a death sentence in the recent nationwide protests in Iran, stating that these individuals face charges including ‘baghy’, ‘moharebeh’, and ‘corruption on earth’, which carry the risk of a death sentence.
