Aunt Nika Shakarami said all of Nika’s teeth were shattered.
Atash Shakarami, the aunt of Nika Shakarami, the teenager killed during the protests in Tehran, wrote on her Instagram that when they received her niece’s body at the morgue, all her teeth were shattered.
Ms. Shakarami, who had gone to the dentist for a tooth extraction, says the experience of the excruciating pain at the dentist reminded her of Nika. She said tears would come; sometimes she could hold them back, sometimes not. She thought of Jojo, who was buried without teeth, wondering how much pain she must have endured.
Nika Shakarami was a 16-year-old protester who went missing after participating in the first demonstrations in September 2022 on Keshavarz Boulevard in Tehran.
After nearly 10 days of no news, Nika’s family was called to identify her body. After identification and transferring the body from Tehran to Khorramabad, sources close to the family reported that security forces stole the body from the Khorramabad city’s mortuary and secretly buried it in a village far from the family’s intended location.
The Iranian judiciary has deemed Nika Shakarami’s death a suicide, but her family claims she was killed by the authorities.
