Nika Shakarami’s aunt sends me terrifying information about the way Nika was arrested and tortured.
Atash Shakarami, Nika Shakarami’s aunt, wrote in a recent Instagram post about her own online torture, describing it as a breathtaking experience and mentioned that it is possible other families of the protest victims have had similar experiences.
She wrote that she received messages from unknown accounts containing terrifying information about the manner of Nika’s arrest, detention, and torture.
Ms. Shakarami said that this information flooded my direct messages to break me down, so I would no longer be able to control my mind and reveal at least part of the truths. I went to the brink of collapse, endured the heaviest and most horrifying days, and ultimately, when I put all that data together, I realized this is also part of the path we are taking—a psychological war.
She addressed the families of other protest victims, saying that there is a 99% chance such information is not accurate. The way to deal with it is to stay strong, remain advocates for justice, and, instead of being crushed by that information, embrace ambiguity.
