Australia calls for the recognition of a Palestinian state
Australia has joined the countries that support the official recognition of a Palestinian state
According to the French news agency, Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong stated that recognizing a Palestinian state could revive the Middle East peace process, which is on the brink of collapse, and weaken extremist forces in the region
Wong, speaking at a meeting in Canberra, Australia’s capital, said that recognizing a Palestinian state, which can only exist alongside a secure Israel, not only gives Palestinians a chance to fulfill their aspirations but also strengthens peacemaking forces while weakening extremism
For several decades, the recognition of a Palestinian state has been considered the final stage of the peace process between Palestinians and their Israeli neighbors
The United States, Australia, and many Western European countries have stated that they are willing to recognize a Palestinian state someday, but not before reaching an agreement on key issues such as the status of Jerusalem and the final borders of the two territories
