Australia Reports Foiling Iranian Espionage Operation

Australia announces thwarting Iranian espionage operation

Australia’s Minister of Home Affairs announced that the country’s security agencies recently thwarted a spying operation by the Iranian government. This operation targeted an Iranian-Australian individual and his family.

Clare O’Neil, Australia’s Minister of Home Affairs, said in her speech at the Australian National University (ANU) on Tuesday, February 14th, that she wants to talk about foreign interference, which is a threat to Australia’s democracy.

She said many countries conduct espionage operations in other countries, but she wants to talk about one country: Iran.

The Australian Minister of Home Affairs revealed that the country’s domestic intelligence agency, ASIO, stopped an espionage operation by the Iranian government late last year. This operation targeted a dual citizen linked to the protests following Mahsa Amini’s death in Australia.
