Australia sanctions 14 Iranian officials connected to the suppression of protesters
The Australian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced new sanctions against officials and institutions of the Islamic Republic. These sanctions are a response to the suppression of protesting Iranian citizens and the sale of drones to Russia, which are used in the Ukraine war.
Penny Wong, the Australian Foreign Minister, stated that 14 senior military, judicial, and political officials, including IRGC officials involved in violence and the suppression of protesters, will not be allowed to travel to this country. The German news agency reported that four senior morality police officers are among these individuals.
The commander of the operations deputy and the political deputy of the IRGC’s Tharallah base, as well as the deputy of operations of the police force, are among those sanctioned.
The Australian Foreign Minister emphasized in a statement that Iranian-made drones target civilians and civilian infrastructure in Ukraine, and the sanctions are consequences for those who materially support Russia.
The statement mentioned that Australia will stand with the people of Iran and the people of Ukraine.
