Austrian Foreign Minister temporarily becomes Chancellor

After numerous struggles in the Austrian political scene, Alexander Schallenberg, the Austrian Foreign Minister, has been temporarily appointed as the Chancellor of Austria until a new government is formed. The former Chancellor, Karl Nehammer, had previously resigned after failed negotiations with the Social Democratic Party (SPÖ) and the Liberal Party (NEOS).

According to Austrian media, Alexander Van der Bellen, the President of Austria, entrusted the administration of the government to this politician from the Austrian People’s Party (ÖVP) in Vienna. Accordingly, Schallenberg is expected to hold this position until a new government is formed. Yesterday, the Austrian People’s Party (ÖVP) officially entered coalition negotiations with the Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ).
