The Austrian Foreign Minister temporarily becomes the Chancellor

Following intense political turmoil in Austria, Alexander Schallenberg, the Foreign Minister of Austria, has been appointed as the Chancellor temporarily until the formation of a new government. Former Chancellor Karl Nehammer had resigned earlier after failed negotiations with the Social Democratic Party (SPÖ) and the liberal party NEOS.

According to Austrian media reports, Alexander Van der Bellen, the Austrian President in Vienna, entrusted the government affairs to this politician from the Austrian People’s Party (ÖVP). Based on this, Schallenberg is expected to hold this position until the formation of a new government. Yesterday, the Austrian People’s Party (ÖVP) officially entered into coalition negotiations with the Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ).
