Axios: Whitkoff calls for an indefinite nuclear deal with Iran
According to an Axios report, Steve Whitkoff said on Tuesday to AIPAC donors in Washington that the Donald Trump administration desires an indefinite agreement with Iran without an expiration date.
According to an American official and two informed sources, Whitkoff emphasized that negotiations started with the premise that there are no sunset clauses and that Iran must permanently adhere to its commitments.
Trump and other critics of the nuclear deal known as the JCPOA, which was concluded during Barack Obama’s administration, have always considered the sunset clauses as one of its main weaknesses. The United States withdrew from this agreement during Trump’s first term.
Whitkoff also stated that the current negotiations are focused on nuclear issues, including Iran’s ability to enrich uranium and the fate of its 60% stockpile. However, if an agreement is reached, Washington is willing to also discuss Iran’s missile program and its support for proxy groups, with regional countries participating in these discussions.
Axios wrote that Iran’s insistence on continuing enrichment on its own soil is one of the main obstacles in the negotiations.
