Ayatollah Khamenei activated the trigger mechanism earlier than Europe.
The honeymoon of Masoud Pezeshkian’s government is coming to an end. The dollar has surpassed 92,000 tomans, and Pezeshkian may achieve a historic record by doubling the price of the dollar and effectively halving the value of the rial in less than a year in office.
Regardless of the reformists’ fallacies, who see him as the heir to the ruins of so-and-so, it is clear that he was aware of the situation and accepted responsibility, so he can no longer blame his predecessors for his evident weakness and inability. However, he delivered the final blow after the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic’s speech on February 11th, to the body of hope of those who, with fear and hope, went to the polls and voted for him, hoping that this minimal reformist option could open a window.
His absolute obedience to Ayatollah Khamenei’s words, which during the election days were painted by artists and designers as wisdom and perceived as a reason to align the leadership for future major openings, seemed to fade with the first rain of truth. He unconditionally followed his superior and declared negotiations with America against honor and rationality. Although the savior’s cloak was too large for the old man from Tabriz from the start, it has now completely fallen off, and the honeymoon is over. Trump came with proposals, and the leader rejected them. Pezeshkian, like a compliant follower, repeated his leader’s words.
The reformists, who initially tried to paint a hopeful picture in the face of Ayatollah Khamenei’s firm stance by interpreting his statements as part of a negotiation, were immediately confronted with a tweet from Mehdi Fazaeli, a member of the Leader’s Office, realizing that interpreting the Leader’s words as one wishes was forbidden.
But now, with Pezeshkian and his foreign minister’s absolute adherence to the policy of no negotiations with America, those who tried to make him a hero against sanctions and isolation realized the game was over. Pezeshkian is the reformist version of Raisi: submissive, without discourse, and trouble-free for his superiors.
From this point in history onward, the Islamic Republic, facing structural corruption challenges with the role of privileged and inefficient offspring, widespread mismatches in pension and energy funds, and many serious governance issues like the deteriorating environmental situation, must also grapple with a serious and important crisis named Trump.
Especially in a situation where its relations with Europe are poor, and the shadow of the activation of the trigger mechanism by Europe looms over it. Internally, public disillusionment and anger are boiling over, and the possibility of the return of UN sanctions and the securitization of the nuclear file casts the shadow of war over the country. What is certain is that the exponential and parallel growth of inefficiency and dissatisfaction has reached a critical point.
There are many problems and limited solutions. Pezeshkian, who seems still not to believe he is in Pasteur and seated in the presidency, either advises the officials or calls for reconciliation. It is clear that his hand is empty. Now, with this president and his government, disillusioned and frustrated people, and numerous problems, what will happen? We must wait a little.
