UK Representative at the UN: The Iranian people have suffered enough
During the discussions on the human rights situation in Iran at the Third Committee of the UN General Assembly, the UK representative said that in recent months the human rights situation in Iran has significantly worsened.
He stated that in the Iranian government’s crackdown on protests following the death of Mahsa Amini, over three hundred and twenty-six people have been killed and fourteen thousand people have been arrested, describing this approach as abhorrent.
He said that the UK welcomes the joint proposal by Iceland and Germany to hold a special session of the UN Human Rights Council in the coming days.
He mentioned that the Iranian people have already suffered enough, yet the Islamic Republic continues to suppress the voice of civil society.
The UK representative added that it is time for the Iranian regime to respect the fundamental rights of the people, including the right to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression. Iranian leaders must change their approach.
In this session, the US representative also stated that his country stands with the people of Iran.
