The UK representative at the UN: The people of Iran have suffered enough
During the negotiations regarding the human rights situation in Iran at the Third Committee of the UN General Assembly, the UK representative stated that the human rights situation in Iran has significantly worsened in recent months.
He said that in the Iranian government’s crackdown on protests following the death of Mahsa Amini, more than three hundred and twenty-six people have been killed and fourteen thousand have been arrested, describing this approach as abhorrent.
He mentioned that the UK welcomes the joint proposal by Iceland and Germany to hold a special session of the UN Human Rights Council in the coming days.
He stated that the people of Iran have already suffered enough, yet the Islamic Republic continues to suppress the voices of civil society.
The UK representative added that it is time for the Iranian regime to respect the fundamental rights of the people, including the right to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression. Iranian leaders must change their approach.
In this session, the US representative also stated that his country stands with the people of Iran.
