UNICEF expresses concern over attacks on schools in Iran
The United Nations Children’s Fund, UNICEF, has called for an end to all forms of violence and abuse against children in Iran.
The statement references reports of more than 50 children being killed in recent protests in Iran, and states that UNICEF is deeply concerned about raids and inspections in some Iranian schools. Schools should always be a safe environment for children.
Student protests continue in various cities across Iran, both in schools and on the streets. According to reports, plainclothes security forces and Basij have repeatedly attacked schools and detained an unspecified number of students.
In this statement, UNICEF urged Iranian authorities to respect the fundamental right of children to peaceful assembly. Regardless of who they are or where they are, children should remain in their families, communities, and schools, and not in places where their freedom is taken away.
