Nazanin Zaghari: Watching tennis was my beacon of hope in solitary confinement
Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe said that in solitary confinement in Evin Prison in 2016, she found hope in life by watching the Wimbledon final, which ended with Andy Murray’s victory. In June 2016, after months of being banned from books, newspapers, and media, the authorities allowed her to watch two television channels. One aired Iranian series, and the other broadcast Wimbledon tennis matches. They didn’t know what they had given me.
Nazanin Zaghari, an Iranian-British citizen, was able to return to the UK on March 16, 2022, after six years of imprisonment in Iran. Ms. Zaghari said she witnessed Andy Murray’s second Wimbledon championship from her cell in Evin Prison, a stadium that was about 5,000 kilometers away at the time. I’ve always been a die-hard Andy Murray fan, but that time I was watching a match from solitary confinement that ended with your victory. I was overwhelmed by your win and can’t express how delightful it was for me.
