The ban on importing refined petroleum products from Russia by Europe has come into effect.
Member countries of the European Union implemented the ban on Monday, prohibiting the import of diesel fuel and other refined petroleum products from Russia.
This ban coincides with the approaching first anniversary of Russia’s military attack on Ukraine and is part of Europe’s efforts to reduce dependence on imported energy resources from Russia and punish Moscow.
The ban comes two days after the Group of Seven countries set price ceilings for these products, meaning that non-Western countries such as China and India will still be able to import the diesel fuel they need from Russia, but price limits have been set to restrict Russia’s income. If these exemptions were not granted to these countries, global energy prices could suddenly increase.
