Erdogan calls the earthquake in Turkey a disaster of the century
The number of casualties from the recent earthquakes in Turkey and Syria, which Recep Tayyip Erdogan has called a disaster of the century, has now reached over 21,000 people.
This figure is much higher than the 18,400 deaths in the 2011 earthquake in Fukushima, Japan, which also caused a tsunami.
The number of casualties from the 1999 earthquake near Istanbul was also about 18,000 people.
The World Health Organization has warned of a major health crisis due to the high death toll of this disaster, which could cause even more damage than the earthquake. Humanitarian organizations are also concerned about the spread of diseases, especially in Syria.
