Canada sanctions 12 officials of the Islamic Republic
Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly stated that the country is sanctioning twelve more senior officials of the Islamic Republic of Iran due to their involvement in gross and systematic human rights violations, including through the suppression of protests.
According to Global News on Monday, some of these individuals are law enforcement officials who have played a role in suppressing protests in the western part of the country.
The office of the Canadian Foreign Minister says it is cooperating with international partners to respond to the Islamic Republic’s very poor treatment of the Iranian people.
Under the new sanctions, the assets of those listed will be frozen in Canada, and they will be barred from entering the country.
Global News reports that Canada has previously imposed many sanctions against Iranian officials and hundreds of institutions, but experts are skeptical about the effectiveness of these sanctions.
