It is not possible for the political deputy of the Rouhani government to return to the JCPOA or make changes to it

Returning to the JCPOA or making changes to it is no longer possible, according to the political deputy of President Rouhani’s administration.

Hamid Abutalebi, the political deputy of the presidency in Rouhani’s government, wrote on his Twitter page.

Returning to the JCPOA or making changes to it is no longer technically possible because

1. After Russia’s attack on Ukraine and the developments in Taiwan, the interests of Russia and China are no longer aligned with the West, and their strategic cooperation has been disrupted, rendering the mechanism of the JCPOA ineffective.

2. Technically, for the West, returning to the JCPOA means accepting the expiration of missile sanctions in late October this year and the expiration of nuclear sanctions in the sense of the necessity to help Iran’s nuclear activities develop with the end of Resolution 2231 in 2025, which serves the interests of Russia and China in terms of commercial and military cooperation.

Therefore, in the new situation and with the role of Russia and China, it will be impossible for the West to return to the JCPOA. The JCPOA lacks technical and temporal sustainability. The remaining hope in Pandora’s box has been lost, and the only solution that America sees for the nuclear issue is nothing but direct and comprehensive negotiations with Iran.
