Imran Khan demands the release of his detained supporters
Imran Khan, the former Prime Minister of Pakistan, has called for the immediate release of his supporters and other party leaders who have been arrested in recent violent protests.
These individuals were arrested during protests against Mr. Khan’s detention. Mr. Khan has stated that these arrests are illegal and has described them as human rights abuses.
Police authorities say that over three thousand people have been arrested during the unrest of the past week.
Imran Khan was arrested on corruption charges but has been released on bail by order of the Supreme Court.
The Pakistani government has accused the detainees of attacking government and military installations and has stated that they should be tried in military courts according to special laws.
Human rights activists say that this means the defendants cannot request bail and are not allowed to appeal the non-military court’s verdict.
