John Bolton’s opposition to a potential new agreement reducing sanctions against Iran makes continued repression possible
John Bolton, the U.S. National Security Advisor at the time of the country’s withdrawal from the JCPOA, opposed the lifting or reduction of international sanctions against the Islamic Republic as part of a potential new agreement, saying such a move enables the continuation of the Islamic Republic’s repressions.
Mr. Bolton said, ‘I don’t think the sanctions are being effectively enforced, and that’s a problem because since 2015, Iran has been able to circumvent the sanctions.’
He added, ‘The nuclear agreement ended with the U.S. withdrawal, and the officials of the Islamic Republic have been able to escape the pressures. Now, with the Biden administration’s leniencies, the regime has found a way out that it doesn’t deserve. Therefore, when they talk about lifting additional sanctions or unblocking assets in the event of some kind of agreement, people need to understand that the money being discussed goes into the regime’s pockets and nothing reaches the Iranian people.’
