Reza Seghati and the Ali Chap Alleyway of the Principlists

Reza Seghati and the Ali Chap Alleyway of the Principlists: According to Iran Gate, the major scandal that unfolded in the Gilan Province’s Department of Culture and Islamic Guidance did not cause the slightest change in the reactionary and fundamentalist positions of the hardline and ultra-revolutionary Principlists regarding the hijab. Although, if such a major scandal had occurred under the reformist government, crowds dressed in shrouds would have been in the streets of Tehran, Qom, and Mashhad, seeking to tear apart the president and the Minister of Guidance.

Reza Seghati, the dismissed head of the Islamic Guidance Department of Gilan Province, who is close to Vahid and Saeed Jalili, did something with the Principlists that perhaps no one could have believed. No one believed that the hardline Principlists in a province that had the most confrontations with non-compliance with hijab and even created many disturbances for businesses would face such a major disgrace. Interestingly, in the past week, there has been noise from the walls, but not a single sound has been heard from government officials and prominent figures of the Stability Front and ultra-revolutionaries.

Greetings to the Jalili brothers

A review of Reza Seghati’s stances in his managerial domain and his activity on social networks clearly shows his attachment to the ultra-revolutionary movement, although images of the Jalilis honoring Seghati have also been published on social networks, leaving no doubt for any observer.

Therefore, the ultra-hardline Principlist movement cannot escape this scandal. The point becomes more concerning when we know that Vahid Jalili, who is the spiritual father of Seghati and others like him, is currently working as a strategist for the national broadcaster. In fact, not only has this scandal affected the Jalili brothers, but it has also implicated a significant portion of the executive, legislative, and governing bodies, including the Revolutionary Guards, the national broadcaster, and others, which are unprecedentedly and uniformly in the hands of the ultra-revolutionaries, leaving no excuse to escape responsibility.

From Saeed Toosi to Reza Seghati

When Saeed Toosi’s case became public and the public became aware of this major scandal, the Principlists exhibited exactly the same behavior as they do today. However, the difference is that in the Toosi case, there was no tangible and explicit evidence of his sexual assaults on children and adolescents, but in the recent case involving the head of the Gilan Province’s Department of Guidance, the matter is entirely different. A video of him that was published in official media and social networks made the issue completely exposed and public in the eyes of public opinion.

For this reason, the Principlists can no longer use the strategy of the revolutionaries’ forward escape and taking the lead as they did in the Toosi case. In fact, the release of a short video of Reza Seghati has completely changed the playing field, and forward escape is no longer possible.

The Double Standard of the Ultra-Revolutionaries

The strange silence of the judiciary and the officials of Ebrahim Raisi’s government regarding this major scandal suggests that it is highly likely that the Principlists intend for this case to become subject to the passage of time, so that public opinion forgets this scandal and becomes completely focused on other issues, allowing this matter to be forgotten.

This is while the judiciary, in cases like Mohsen Shekari and Majidreza Rahnavard, formed courts with astonishing speed and haste and issued death sentences for young people who, at worst, set a trash can on fire in the streets. But in the case of Seghati, where the ruling is completely clear and Shiite jurisprudence’s stance on it is entirely evident, not the slightest reaction has been seen from the country’s judicial authorities.

This behavior, which indicates the existence of a double standard in the Principlists’ positions, sends a signal to society that the Principlists intend to play dumb for now and quietly pass by the matter. However, as mentioned, this case has many differences from the Saeed Toosi issue, especially as it is also linked to the hijab issue, and the anniversary of Mahsa Amini’s death in the custody of Tehran’s morality police is approaching, and security agencies are preparing to suppress protests.
