Potential Agreement Between Iran and India on the Development of Chabahar Port
The Indian newspaper Mint, citing informed sources, has reported that Iran and India are negotiating further development of Chabahar Port and are likely to sign a new agreement by September, the beginning of fall.
According to the report published on Friday, July 28, after years of negotiations, it is expected that Iran and India will reach a multi-year agreement under which India will develop and take long-term management of the Shahid Beheshti terminal at Chabahar Port.
The Chabahar development contract was signed in 2016 between India’s Global Ports company and Iran’s Aria Bandar, under which India developed part of Chabahar Port.
An official from India’s Ministry of Ports told the newspaper that the terms of the long-term contract will be finalized in August and are likely to be signed by the parties in September.
India and Iran have currently extended the contract for the development and management of Chabahar by New Delhi for another year, but India is seeking to sign a long-term 10-year contract for managing this port.
