Italy charges tourists for entering Venice
Italian authorities are implementing an unprecedented experimental plan to charge tourists for entering the historic city of Venice in order to control the number of visitors during peak tourist times.
Venice officials announced in a press conference on Friday, December 2nd that this measure is being taken to manage the influx of tourists during spring holidays and some summer weekends when the number of visitors reaches its peak.
The restriction on entering Venice is scheduled to be in effect from 8:30 am to 4:00 pm local time and initially planned for a total of 29 days.
Most of these days include weekends and cover from April 25th to mid-July next year.
Travelers must pay the entrance fee of five euros online and receive a barcode, which they need to present at the city’s entry points.
