Politico reports that Russia intends to withdraw its 2,000 troops from Karabakh as it redirects its forces towards the conflict in Ukraine.
Just six months after witnessing the forced migration of a group of Armenians from this region, the Kremlin surprised everyone by stating that Russia will withdraw all its nearly 2,000 troops from the Karabakh region.
According to Russia’s state news network TASS, Dmitry Peskov, the Kremlin spokesperson, confirmed the troops’ withdrawal on Thursday.
Under the terms of the 2020 ceasefire between Azerbaijan and Armenia, 1,960 Russian troops, along with hundreds of armored vehicles and other military equipment, were stationed in the region.
They were tasked with peacekeeping duties at least until the end of 2025, but Moscow is now redirecting all available resources towards its own conflict with Ukraine.
