Amnesty International’s letter urges an end to the war on women over mandatory veil
In a letter addressed to Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei, the head of the Judiciary of the Islamic Republic, Amnesty International has listed numerous brutal suppressions against women and girls, calling it a war by Iranian authorities to impose compulsory veiling on women.
Referring to a statement issued on Tuesday, May 7, at the start of the ‘Noor and Narah’ plan and the deployment of security patrols in public places in Iranian cities to force women to accept compulsory veiling.
Amnesty International says that the government’s repressive actions have intensified in public spaces over the past month, seeking to violate women’s right to choose their own dress through means such as beating, sexual violence, electric shocks, arbitrary arrest and detention, and various forms of harassment and abuse.
The authorities of the Islamic Republic resumed harsh crackdowns on citizens over compulsory veiling starting from Saturday, April 14, naming the program ‘Noor Plan’.
