Disruption of Maps and Navigators in Iran
For several weeks, disruptions in GPS have caused online maps and navigators to malfunction. According to investigations, this disruption is more evident in major cities, including Tehran and Isfahan.
If you are a user of online taxi services or use online maps to navigate in a busy city like Tehran to find addresses, you have surely noticed that these navigators no longer provide accurate routes to users as they used to. An investigation by Shargh into online taxi services and domestic maps and navigators shows that the disruption in GPS, which intensified last week, has caused navigation in Tehran to not function correctly.
According to a report by Shargh, last week, Javad Amel, the CEO of the Neshan navigator, stated in an interview that what is currently happening is GPS spoofing from an unknown source, causing problems for navigation and map applications.
Follow-ups with the Ministry of Communications, as the frequency authority in the country, show that they have not made any changes to the frequency routes that would cause GPS disruptions. Additionally, the Ministry of Communications stated in follow-ups regarding the reason for this disruption that they are not responsible in this area and that military and security organizations should provide answers.
