UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Reacts to Recent Consecutive Executions in Iran

Volker Türk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, has expressed deep concern over reports of 29 executions in the past two days.

Liz Throssell, spokesperson for the UN Human Rights Office, also stated that this indicates a highly alarming number of executions in such a short period.

Although the United Nations has said it cannot independently verify these executions, Ms. Throssell mentioned that based on reported executions, the total number of executions this year has reached at least 345, including the execution of 15 women.

The Iran Human Rights organization, based in Norway, reported on Wednesday, August 7 (17th of Mordad), that 29 men, including two Afghan nationals and an ethnic Baluch minority, were executed in Qezel Hesar Prison in Karaj on charges of murder and drug-related offenses.
