Marine Le Pen, leader of the far-right party, was tried on charges of misuse of European Union funds.

Marine Le Pen, leader of the far-right National Rally party, will soon be tried in Paris on charges of misuse of European Parliament funds.

More than 20 senior figures of this party are facing the same charge. They are accused of hiring assistants who, instead of attending to European Parliament matters, worked on National Rally party affairs.

If convicted, Ms. Le Pen may face a fine or imprisonment and be banned from party activities for five years, which would destroy her presidential ambitions. The National Rally party claims no wrongdoing has been committed.
