Full Membership of Indonesia in BRICS

The Brazilian government, which currently holds the presidency of the BRICS group, announced that Indonesia has joined this group as a full member. Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, and the United Arab Emirates also became BRICS members last year.

BRICS, which brings together some emerging economies like Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, is recognized as a counterweight to the Group of Seven or G7, consisting of the seven advanced industrialized countries in the world.

Iran, with the support of Vladimir Putin, the President of Russia, joined BRICS in the summer of 2023 during the presidency of Ebrahim Raisi, the former president of the country.

At that time, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, the Speaker of the National Assembly, described the use of alternative currencies for trade between BRICS members as one of the important actions of this group, which would cut off one of the main levers of pressure the United States has on emerging economies.

Turkey applied for BRICS membership last summer but was unsuccessful.
