France urges the European Union to sanction officials of the Islamic Republic
Jean-Noël Barrot, the French Foreign Minister, announced on Monday, January 27th, that France intends to propose the imposition of severe sanctions against certain officials of the Islamic Republic. According to him, these officials are responsible for the detention of French citizens in Iran.
He clarified on this matter, stating, ‘We will propose to the European Union that those responsible for these arbitrary detentions be sanctioned by the EU in the coming months.’
The European Parliament also recently, on January 23rd, called on the Islamic Republic through a resolution to release EU citizens imprisoned in Iran, including French writer Olivier Grandjean, French teacher Cécile Kohler and her partner Jacques Paris, as well as Ahmadreza Djalali, a Swedish-Iranian citizen.
Olivier Grandjean was arrested on October 12, 2022, at his residence in Shiraz, coinciding with the ‘Woman, Life, Freedom’ protest movement.
